ARTIFICIAL REEFS
Coral reefs play an
important role in the health of the world's oceans. Vibrant in color
and rich in biodiversity, they are the life support system to
thousands of marine organisms. Biologists call them "the rainforests
of the sea" because of their multi-functional purpose on Earth. But
changes to the climate and the environment are causing a great deal
of stress to coral reefs. Nervous scientists are testing the waters
for ways to protect coral reefs from disappearing. One way that's
been proven to resuscitate coral is to create artificial reefs by
planting coral on specially designed structures called "reef balls".
So far half a million reef balls have been deployed in more than
forty countries. CNN's Michael Holmes dives into the Persian Gulf
waters off Kuwait to see how these prehistoric looking objects can
breathe new life underwater within a short time.
