On Aug. 6, members of the Rod and Gun Club
helped deploy six reef balls as part of a new artificial reef
located about 10 miles west of Marco Island. These reef balls,
created through the Eternal Reefs organization, are memorial reef
balls containing the ashes of individuals. The ashes are mixed with
concrete, and marked with a commemorative bronze plaque identifying
the person. Well-suited for the ocean floor, the reef balls will not
only attract schools of fish to allow for better protection, but
also should withstand corrosion for many years. There was a small
memorial service during the deployment with about 30 individuals
participating. The effort took about six hours to complete.
